Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)

Transparency is becoming increasingly important across the construction industry. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provide clear, independently verified information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle.

EPDs are based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which evaluates environmental impacts from raw material extraction and manufacturing through transportation, installation, use and end-of-life treatment.

By providing standardised environmental data, EPDs allow customers, engineers, architects and specifiers to make informed decisions and compare products on a like-for-like basis.

As sustainability requirements continue to grow, EPDs are becoming an essential tool for responsible product selection and environmental reporting.

What is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) measures the environmental impacts associated with a product throughout its entire life cycle.

This assessment typically considers:

  • Raw material sourcing
  • Transportation
  • Manufacturing
  • Delivery to site
  • Installation and use
  • Maintenance
  • Reuse and recycling
  • End-of-life treatment

By analysing every stage of a product's journey, LCAs help identify opportunities to reduce carbon emissions, improve resource efficiency and support a circular economy.

Why are EPDs Important?

  • Independently verified environmental data
  • Transparent and comparable product information
  • Supports sustainable procurement decisions
  • Contributes to green building certification schemes
  • Helps reduce project carbon footprints
  • Encourages continuous environmental improvement

Why this matters

The environmental impact of buildings is shaped long before construction begins, through the products specified and the data available to assess them.

By improving access to reliable, verified environmental data, we help our customers:

  • Understand whole-life impacts
  • Make informed specification decisions
  • Reduce embodied carbon at building level

This is a critical step in supporting the transition to a net-zero emission, nature-positive built environment.

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is a standardised document that discloses the environmental performance or impact of any product or substance across its lifetime in a transparent manner.

An EPD is a standardised document that:

  • Reports environmental performance across a product’s life cycle

  • Is based on the ISO 14025 standard

  • Is based on detailed LCA data

  • Is independently verified

EPDs provide consistent, comparable data, supporting more informed specification and procurement decisions.
